The 10th grade students of Lakewood High School’s 2.0 program will be exhibiting their work from “The WikiSeat Project” at the Beck Center for the Arts on Monday, Feb. 6 from 6-8 p.m. The project required the students to design and build a chair by hand. On display will be the final results of a unique learning experience that called for students to engage in ideas surrounding design concepts, the experiential learning cycle, and the works of Ralph Waldo Emerson.

The Lakewood High School chapter of the National Honor Society welcomed 62 standout students into its ranks at its annual induction ceremony held Feb. 2 at the Civic Auditorium. Entrance into NHS is the highest honor a school can bestow on a student.

Senior Aturo Morgan, who Ranger fans watched scramble and throw all over the field these past two seasons as the Rangers’ quarterback, will be taking his speed and athleticism down the road to Division II Lake Erie College in Painesville next year.

  Sporting an Iowa State red sweater, Lakewood High senior Nick Jackosky capped off his stellar cross country and track career by signing a Letter of Intent to run for the Division I school in Ames, Iowa, on Feb. 1, National Signing Day. Jackosky, who is also a National Honor Society student, will receive scholarship money for both his athletic and academic achievements..

Lakewood’s students creativity and imagination were celebrated at the annual Lakewood PTA Council Reflections Ceremony, held Jan. 31 at the Civic Auditorium. One hundred thirty-nine works by nearly 200 students from preschool through high school were honored and 24 students’ works were chosen to move on to the state PTA judging.

On Tuesday, Feb. 7, the Lakewood High Guidance Department will hold informational sessions for parents on course selection for their student for the 2012-2013 school year. Some new policies have been instituted and counselors will be there to explain as well as to answer any questions. The meeting for parents of incoming 9th graders is 7-8 p.m. and for 10th-12th graders from 8-9 p.m., both in Lecture Hall 2.
February 1st is the first-ever Digital Learning Day, a national campaign from the Alliance for Excellent Education designed to celebrate innovative teachers and teaching practices that are making learning more engaging through the use of technology. We are fortunate here in Lakewood to be on the forefront in our area for implementing technology in the classroom that is preparing our students for success in the 21st century wireless world.

The support behind Lakewood High’s new Horticulture Outdoor Learning Lab continues to grow. The project, which benefitted from the Lakewood Garden Club’s super successful fund-raising efforts, recently received a $5,000 grant from Lowe’s Charitable and Educational Foundation.

As it does each year, Lakewood City Schools has a number of young artists that have been recognized for their artistic talent in the prestigious Scholastic Art & Writing Awards national competition. Three Lakewood High students were honored with the top award - Gold Key Winner - in the Cuyahoga County Region and will have their artwork judged on the national level next month.

As the Lakewood City Schools enters 2012 facing many opportunities and challenges, Superintendent Jeff Patterson has scheduled a series of community engagement meetings to inform citizens about the goals of the district, its financial standing, and to solicit the input of the community on solving the significant fiscal issues the district faces. The first one will be Wed., Jan. 18 at 7 p.m. at Hayes Elementary School.
